What we can learn from Global Pandemics?

Corona virus is continuing its spread across the world. The total number of coronavirus cases in the world stands at 11,327,790 and 532,340 people have died from the disease so far.

In this article, I am not going to share the negative consequences of this pandemic rather we will explore the valuable aspects from which we can learn many attributes of humanity.

In past, many pandemics and epidemics have threatened the human world. We fought and defeated almost all of those diseases, but what did we learn from those epidemics? Yes, we learned. We developed our medical science; we made vaccines; we did many researches on microorganisms; we invented treatments for the various diseases and. But, 'Learning' doesn't mean intellectual developments only. Learning is the comprehensive development of body, mind and soul. It includes intellectual, psychological, social, moral and emotional development.
I will explain mainly about social, moral and emotional learnings during this pandemic.

I point out five important areas where we need to develop our learnings.

1. Health is important:

The Corona 'kala' (period) has made us feel the importance of a good health.

Do you remember the famous phrase, "Survival of the fittest" stated by British Naturalist Charlies Darwin? The phrase suggested that organisms best adjusted to their environment are the most successful in surviving and reproducing.
Each and every organisms keep evolving themselves to adjust themselves in their surroundings. We human beings must adopt healthy habits to develop our immunity to minimise the poisonous effects of microbes.
Now, this tough period is teaching us that we can no longer compromise with our health. In our busy lives, we have to give more importance to our health. Otherwise, we will surely be unable to survive in the external environment or we will fall behind in the competition of life.

2. Respect for life supporting substances:
We know very well what we need to live?
Do I have to tell that the most important assets we have to live are air, water and food?
Do I have to tell that other than air, water and food we need good education and better health facilities?
But, alas! We never understood the real value of these important things.

Now the the time has come for us to learn that we should give respect to the substances which give us life. We must preserve these basic things; we have to understand the importance of sustainable management of such resources.

3. Unity:

Can we fight pandemics without unity?
We have talked a lot about the subject of 'unity', but never felt it wholeheartedly. Now we have to feel it. I am talking about the unity of the people with the people. I am talking about the unity of the government with the people. I am talking about the unity among all countries. I am talking about global unity.

Pandemics have been teaching us for centuries that we humans should work in unison.

4. Sense of priority:

I will mention an example in this regards.
Man is not only the most intelligent creature on this planet but also the most curious creature. There is a famous proverb, "curiosity killed the cat". Probably, man has become a symbol of that cat.

I have heard that man(as a species) now wants to establish his civilisation on Mars. To make this dream come true, man is investing his knowledge and money(or resourses). It is a good thing to fulfill curiosities, but running after meaningless curiosity is just like living in a fool's paradise.
If humans had used the same money(or resourses) and knowledge to make their home planet clean and beautiful, instead of finding life in a dead planet, today our earth would have become a heaven.

I am talking about 'sense of  priority'. We must learn what would be our first and next priority. We cannot ignore that humans are distorting the beauty and systems of the planet where they live. Rather than finding ways to live on an alien planet, spending our money and knowledge to heal the ecosystem of the earth should be our first priority.
We make organisations to solve environmental issues, but environmental pollution keeps increasing.
We make organisations which take the responsibility for the protection of children in respect of their survival, health, and well being, but nearly 385 million children worldwide are living in extreme poverty.
We make organisations to improve the global economy, but as of 2016, roughly 734 million people remained in extreme poverty (roughly 1 in 10 people).
We make organisations to establish peace in the world, but as of 2019 there are approximately 3750 active nuclear warheads and 13890 total nuclear warheads in the world.

You may think about more such organisations which lack the sense of priority. Though our objectives are ethical we are not able to fulfill our primary responsibilities, therefore we fail to achieve our goals 100 percent.
Actually, we decided to turn a blind eye to the global issues (which must be our priority) everytime with a hope that we would find solutions to these problems. We never kept these issues in our 'first priority' list.

Hence, let us cut the crackle and work for the benefit of the masses. Let us take actions to make this world 'pure', healthy and peaceful. The world needs huge numbers of people who are 'men of action'.

5. Humanity:

Global pandemics have taught us to practice humanity. These microorganisms don't descriminate humans on the basis of their race, religion, caste, language etc. They simply infect them to carry out their life processes. All they need is a host cell where they can establish their DNAs. They don't care whether the cell belongs to a white or black. Moreover, they don't care about the religion of that cell. Do they?

Just as we cannot teach a snake to bite; just as we cannot teach a dog to move it's tail; just as we cannot teach a lion to roar, in the same way we cannot teach a human to practice humanity. Just as qualities of a particular animal are automatically exposed, in the same way every single quality of human is already present in us. But, unfortunately many times we forget these qualities.
I would like to remind all of you about those human qualities.

Characteristics of humanity which influence the individuals are as follows:

(I) Humility: The more humble you are the stronger you become. Humility is the quality which makes a person polite and kind. Humility does not mean you hurt others, but it means you don't rely on others for your strength. Yes, humility gives you the strength to understand 'human diversity'.
(II) Equality: White, Yellow, Black, Brown.....we are all human and deserve equality in humanity. Respect others if you want to be respected. Treat others how you want to be treated.
If you do not have a sense of equality for others, then you lack an important human quality.
(III) Nobility: Real Nobility is based on scorn, courage, and profound indifference. We must adopt the quality of Nobility which makes us Noble in character or quality.
(IV) Integrity: Integrity means adherence to moral and ethical principles. The meaning of integrity is also associated with the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness, the state of being whole and undivided. If you do right things then there should not be place for fear and doubts.
(V) Heroism: The quality of Heroism is another important quality of human beings. A true hero is someone who has conquered all fear of man, death, horror, pain etc. A hero is a man who has courage and Noble qualities.
(VI) Truthfulness: To be a true human one must be Truthful! We must develop ourselves to become an honest and sincere man. The quality of Truthfulness comes with true education. We must come out from fake beliefs and knowledge. According to Swami Vivekananda, true education is always a discovery of truth. It knows no compromise with anything that stands in the way of efflorescence of truth.

What we can learn from global pandemics?
Conclusion:

As I wrote earlier, there is no limit to learning. In this article I have told about five important topics from which we can learn a lot during this corona period. The stated things are based on basic and human values. We can bring change in the whole society by bringing changes in ourselves. I believe that this article will provide positive energy to the lives of readers and infuse human values in them.

Wish you a healthy life.
